I am excited to welcome Southwest Dairy to the pumpkin patch on October 27. They will have their mobile classroom at Johnstown Farm from 1:00 to 5:00 on the last Sunday of the season!

As I checked out the patch this morning, here’s what I found:
The GOOD-nice looking Polar Bear pumpkins, maturing gourds, and an amazing spider among other pollinators
The BAD-squash bug eggs and hatchlings
The UGLY-a spot of “stressed” plants covered with black insects
I was concerned about these ugly bugs and vines, so I collected some sample insects, snapped some pictures with my tablet (loving the help of technology), and headed to Stutzman Garden Center. The diagnosis was good-those are not aphids or mites, just some gnats attracted to the pumpkin nearby that had been nibbled on by some critter. The critter is most likely to blame for the damaged vines too. Whew!
It was time to hit the fields again and weed. This time was all hand weeding. Wow – was I ever grateful for our willing workers who came out for a looonng morning! They got a little wet; they fought the mosquitoes, but they did a great job. I was also grateful for a cool morning in which to work. We’ll need a few more hours to finish up, but I (for one) will have to wait a few days until I can walk again – sheesh! My thirty-something muscles are letting me know I am no longer one of those teenagers out in the field.
Right after we were finished, it began to rain again. I am still thankful for the rain God sends, but we could use a day or two to dry out. I can’t believe I just wrote that considering last summer’s drought!

Last week was great fun! I wanted to catch up with a few pictures.
My own children were very interested in having the students show them how the Braille machine works.
This weekend was busy as well! Many families came out to enjoy the day on the farm and left with the perfect pumpkins for carving. Thanks, Julie Wisbey for the pictures. Don’t forget that she is out most weekends, available for family autumn photo sessions.
