Weeding Time (again)

It was time to hit the fields again and weed. This time was all hand weeding. Wow – was I ever grateful for our willing workers who came out for a looonng morning! They got a little wet; they fought the mosquitoes, but they did a great job. I was also grateful for a cool morning in which to work. We’ll need a few more hours to finish up, but I (for one) will have to wait a few days until I can walk again – sheesh! My thirty-something muscles are letting me know I am no longer one of those teenagers out in the field.

Right after we were finished, it began to rain again. I am still thankful for the rain God sends, but we could use a day or two to dry out. I can’t believe I just wrote that considering last summer’s drought!

All Aboard!

We had a good time at the Kansas Kids (more than a) Museum last Saturday.  They hosted their annual Party on the Pavement event at the Hutchinson Mall. With a window of clear weather, the day was such fun!

You can check out more about this local resource for learning, exploration, and fun at their site: http://kansaskidsmuseum.com/

Flowers!

Johnstown Farm looks amazing in the mornings! The flowers have begun to blossom. They are out in full force  in the early sun. If you are close by, you should drive by, but they do shut during the heat of the day and evenings, so come early.  I am loving the insects crawling around (except for those nasty squash bugs that we have to watch for). One of these flowers had for bees-our favorite pollinators-in it just before I snapped the picture. Go bees, go!

Summer

Somehow it is the latter part of Summer 2013 already!  This summer is decidedly different from the past two summers, and we are so thankful.  The rains have come when the plants needed them, and the temperatures have not been as extreme as the past two summers. The plants are really showing it!

Here is a leaf on one of the Dill's Atlantic Giant pumpkin vines.
